What is Magic?
At a glance, Magic is a collectible card game filled with strategic battles and unique card decks. But Magic has always been bigger than the box. Whether you’re having fun at the kitchen table, battling in a high-stakes competition, or playing at your local library there’s something for you here.
Whether you are a new player or a veteran, this program is for you! Josh, our organizer, has been a Magic player for more than 25 years and a Magic Judge since 2004. He’s here to help anyone with their questions, teach them to play, or help them build a deck.

What is Commander?
The Commander format is all about picking your hero and building a deck around them. In this casual, multiplayer format, you choose a legendary creature to serve as your commander and build the rest of your deck around their color identity and unique abilities. Players are only allowed one of each card in their deck, with the exception of basic lands, but they can use cards from throughout Magic‘s history.
Is Commander good for beginners and how do I play?
Commander is a format about colorful characters and big powerful spells. If you’ve been interested in magic and those things appeal to you then Commander is for you. For the beginner Commander can beat great format because there is little limitation on Magic‘s almost 30 year history. You can build a deck with almost anything.
Deck building rules are simple:
1. Pick a legendary, that’s your Commander.
2. The colors listed are your Commander are it’s “color identity.” You may only have cards in your deck from those colors.
3. Except for basic lands you may only have 1 copy of a card.
5. Your deck must be 100 cards. Your Commander plus 99 others.
But I still don’t have a Deck?!?
Don’t worry about that. Firstly there are now a good number of pre-built commander decks you could buy. Secondly Josh will be bringing extra decks for new players to play and see what they like.
